ABOUT MY WORK

I’ve spent my life standing up to powerful industries that pollute our environment and threaten our health, including:

  • Eliminating harmful chemicals and plastics from our lives
  • Protecting children and future generations
  • Promoting health, transparency, and safe alternatives
  • Holding corporations accountable

In 1996, I founded the Center for Environmental Health (CEH) to eliminate toxic chemicals that threaten our health. CEH has a track record of creating profound and measurable change that has made our air, water, food and products safer. At CEH, I advised and negotiated with powerful corporate and elected leaders, testified on Capitol Hill, and led an organization made up of highly skilled, extremely effective and deeply committed experts.

During my time at CEH we got real, measurable health-protective policies passed at the local, state and federal levels. And we sued hundreds of large corporations to force them to stop making families and communities sick. For example, our litigation forced Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson to eliminate lead from the baby powder they sold, and we were the first to force Juul to stop marketing to teens. I stepped down as CEO in January 2023 to make room for the next generation of leadership.  Please join me in supporting the important work of CEH and their CEO Kizzy Charles-Guzman.

Prior to CEH, I worked for the Tibetan refugee community in Dharamsala, India to create a solid waste management plan, and cared for the sick at Mother Teresa’s Kalighat mission in Kolkata. I also worked for the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) in The Hague, and in Washington DC at both the US Dept of Energy and US EPA.

I’m a recipient of the Compassion in Action Award given by the Dalai Lama Foundation as well as awards from the California Wellness Foundation and the US Secretary of Energy, and currently serve on the boards of the Camp For All Kids, International Pollutants Elimination Network and Kreddha.

Today, I am moved to partner with those in the private, philanthropic and non-profit sectors who aspire to change the world. Specifically, I am bringing my strategic lens to support the most important work, including:

  • Coaching decision-makers on the largest challenges they face,
  • Supporting the creation of organizational cultures of respect & shared community,
  • Creating and implementing programmatic, fundraising, and philanthropic strategies that empower real change in the world,
  • Eliminating plastics from our lives,
  • Protecting our health by countering corporations that turn ancient fossils into plastics, pesticides and climate-changing gases,
  • Developing genuine, inspirational, and effective communications strategies and practices,
  • Building authentic relationships among mission-driven companies, non-profits and grassroots communities, and
  • Bringing increased mindfulness to work cultures.
